Today, with our arrival at Villa O’Higgins, we completed the last stage of the Carretera Austral: 129 km. Since the beginning of our journey, starting from Puerto Montt on November 20th, we’ve covered a total of 1,247 km.
The day began early at 6:45 AM, leaving Caleta Tortel by boat to travel along the coast from our cabaña to the camper, passing by the picturesque village of Caleta Tortel. From there, we transferred 20 km by camper to the junction with Puerto Yungay, where the cycling stage began.
The first 20 km of cycling were on an easy but uphill ripio to reach the ferry point for crossing a fjord, a journey of about 7 km by water.
After one hour of navigation, we disembarked and continued the cycling stage for another 100 km.
We arrived in Villa O’Higgins, the end of the Carretera Austral, where we took celebratory photos and toasted with Chilean chop beer.
In the evening, we had dinner at a Chilean family’s home, enjoying cordero (lamb) accompanied by wine and beer.
