ON HORSEBACK LIKE TRUE GAUCHOS

December 26, 2024

Today was dedicated to a horseback excursion in a hilly area with views of the Perito Moreno Glacier.

We set off in a car driven by Miguel, our chauffeur, for a one-hour journey to reach Estancia Anita, where a few gauchos had prepared horses for our ride.

During the drive, we spotted a roadside monument dedicated to the workers who sacrificed their lives during the 1921 uprising to defend their rights. It was a simple monument, much like the one we had already seen near the town of Gobernador Gregores.

Once at the estancia, we donned cowboy boots and hats and, accompanied by the estancia’s gauchos, embarked on a long ride through a steppelike landscape with views of Lake Roca.

Midway through the ride, we had our first glimpse of the Perito Moreno Glacier, named after the surveyor tasked with defining the borders in Patagonia between Chile and Argentina.

Lunch consisted of meat cooked in a pan over an open fire, accompanied by local red wine.

The horses were extremely tame, and with their slow pace, it was a real challenge to stay awake. It felt like riding wooden horses on a carousel at a fairground. At the beginning, we’d hoped for a slightly more dynamic ride—maybe some trotting or even galloping!
