We had a ferry booked to take us to Porvenir in Tierra del Fuego, still in Chile, crossing the Strait of Magellan. As forecasted, the weather was bad, with strong winds that escalated to extreme levels by late morning, preventing the ferry’s departure.
We decided to drive about 100 km further north to a shorter crossing point, which appeared to be open. It was—but not for long. Ours was likely the last trip of the day, as wind gusts reached 100 km/h.
With the camper, we made it to Cerro Sobrero, where we decided to stop for the night. The wind is expected to subside by tomorrow, allowing us to continue and stick as closely as possible to the original cycling itinerary.
In these conditions, you have to anticipate possible technical stops in less-than-ideal locations, though every place ends up having its own charm in the end.
