THE MARVELLOUS CAPILLAS DE MARMOL

December 3, 2024

A great day, not spent cycling but visiting one of the most fascinating and iconic places in all of Chile: Las Capillas de Mármol. Over the years, water and wind have sculpted these rocks into spectacular and unique formations.

We set off from Puerto Río Tranquilo on a boat, facing a strong wind but well-prepared for the excursion. The lake’s waters were a bit choppy, but the experience was absolutely unique. We were taken to six different spots, each one distinct from the other. The boat even ventured into the caves, revealing indescribable colors ranging from white to green to gray, all illuminated by sunlight reflecting off the crystal-clear water.

Over the years, the work of wind and water has shaped the rocks into forms resembling various animals—at one moment a dog, then an elephant, and next a turtle. The tour is a continuous crescendo of amazement, culminating in the Cathedral and the Chapel.

We returned across a very choppy lake, but with an excellent driver.

In the evening, after the usual grocery shopping, we invited our neighboring guests for a barbecue dinner of grilled meat, vegetables, and cheese. They turned out to be a friendly Brazilian family, and the connection was immediate, with a lively exchange of experiences.

Later, the new camper driver, Javier, a friend of Sebastián, arrived to join us.
